I am Hiran Venugopalan, an computer engineer from India. Blogs and Tweets. I am not a person who had contributed much to wikipedia, for the fact that my language is not much good to make a quality wiki content. I am curious about user interfaces and human factor.

Why I typed all these? Just to check the new usability pattern of Wikipedia! I first used sandbox, then thought, as I am having a Userpage then why should I use sandbox...

My Suggestions

I just saw this effort two or three days before. I don't know who all are working and how can i contribute, these content mearly share my ideas on how the wikipedia can be made user friendly for a reader and on how to turn a wiki reader (like me) to a wiki contributor

Usability

  1. Well, the new looks cool. The new design specially the left bar is impressive, tabs look nice.
  2. The new edit tool bar is nice. Good to see the gnome icons here. they are looking fine. My suggestion is that : in the case if help is enabled, if the user clicks any buttons (or hover) move the help to that buttons usage. will help starters (who uses the help)
  3. The box designs: can't we make them a bit more 2.0 border less, rounded corner boxes will make it to look better? ( i know its a CSS thing! I am talking about the default themes usability :D )
  4. The box reminds me about making of box, its a bit heavy, to make a template first and then add its meta to the page and... could we simplify the basic templates usage? a box making / template suggesting tool inside toolbox > advanced
    1. Layout tables As a user reaches to edit page, provide him a set of layouts
    2. This looks like that tool: A page/tool inside wiki for users to design required boxes (in a WYSISYG or Fill the form way). after it is designed, the tool compares with similar boxes and notifies user about those. the user can either use one existing or the one created!

Publicity

...Will come soon...
